March Safari in Amboseli – What to Expect & What to Pack

March Weather in Amboseli National Park – March is a transition month. Even though it is a wet month, some heat from February may still continue.

Amboseli National Park in March is wet. This does not mean it will rain all the time. Since Amboseli is near the equator, the sun can shine or it can rain at any time of the year. In March, the park usually receives over 250 mm of rain. The average temperature is about 28°C as the highest and around 18°C as the lowest. Days are about 12 hours long, with the sun rising at about 6:20 am and setting at 5:40 pm.

You can talk to your tour operator to help choose the best time to visit Amboseli National Park.

What to Pack for Your Amboseli March Safari

First, be open-minded, ready for adventure, and make sure you have space in your luggage for the many memories you will make.

Wear comfortable clothes. Avoid heavy or tight clothes. Choose clothes that are easy to wash so you can reuse them during your safari. It is best not to wear bright colors on game drives because they can scare the animals. Most game drives happen in the morning. Bring some warm clothes for cool mornings and evenings, but also clothes you can take off when it gets hot. Dressing in layers works best.

The most important items to pack are:

  • Clothes in khaki, neutral, or dull colors
  • Long-sleeved shirts to protect against mosquitoes and insects
  • Light t-shirts
  • Shorts or skirts for those who prefer them
  • Sweaters for cold mornings and evenings
  • Jeans and safari pants
  • A light rain jacket because it can rain any time
  • Swimwear for swimming or beach visits
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturizer, and lip balm
  • Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
  • Binoculars and a scope if you have them

Most airlines limit luggage to about 15 kilograms, while some allow up to 24 kilograms. Keep this in mind when packing. Many hotels and lodges offer laundry services, so you can wash and reuse clothes during your safari.

Other useful but less important items to include:

  • Personal toiletry bag with shampoo, soap, deodorant, hairbrush, toothpaste, conditioner, and toothbrush
  • Wipes, hand sanitizer, and sanitary products for women
  • Scissors and a pocket knife
  • An alarm clock so you don’t lose track of time
  • Money pouch or money belt
  • Field guide books
  • A pen and a notebook
