Animals in Amboseli – Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular parks in Kenya. It is the second most visited park after Masai Mara National Reserve. Amboseli covers about 390 square kilometers. The park has five main types of habitats: acacia woodlands, open grassland savannahs, swampy areas, dry lake beds, and bushy vegetation.
These habitats support many different animals in large numbers, making Amboseli a great place for wildlife viewing. The park is famous for its large herds of African elephants, which are the main attraction for many visitors.
Some of the animals you can see in Amboseli include elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, lions, cheetahs, and leopards, though leopards are rarely seen. You can also find Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, topis, lesser kudus, hyraxes, dik-diks, mongooses, crocodiles, wild dogs, jackals, warthogs, and foxes. Over 40 types of antelopes live in the park. There is also a wide variety of birds.
The open grassland savannah in Amboseli makes it easy to spot animals during game drives. The sparse trees and bushes, especially in the dry season, give visitors clear views of the wildlife.
Home to the Big Four
While in Amboseli, you have the chance to see four of Africa’s famous big animals: the lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, and the leopard, though leopards are hard to find. The rhinoceros no longer lives in the park.
