Elephants in Amboseli National Park – Elephants are one of the Big Five animals you can see in Amboseli National Park. They are the main attraction and a symbol of the park. Amboseli is known for having large herds of elephants. Even though the park is small, it is home to more than 1,800 elephants. This number is higher than most other parks and conservation areas in the region. The Amboseli Elephant Trust has worked hard to protect these elephants and keep their numbers strong.
Because of the many elephants here, Amboseli attracts many researchers and filmmakers. One well-known documentary made by the BBC is about the Echo Elephant, which lived in the park and was famous for its broken tusk. Stories like this bring attention to the importance of elephant conservation.
In the park, there are about 58 families of elephants. Each family includes over 300 adult males. Elephant families are usually led by an adult female called the matriarch. These animals have strong family bonds and often live together in clans. Female elephants have a long pregnancy that lasts about 640 days. When baby elephants are born, they usually weigh about 120 kilograms.
Amboseli has four of the African Big Five animals: elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes. One animal from the Big Five, the rhinoceros, is not found in Amboseli. Besides elephants and big cats like lions and leopards, you can see other wildlife such as cheetahs, serval cats, dik-dik, kobs, gazelles, topis, wildebeests, zebras, jackals, hyenas, impalas, giraffes, and warthogs.
