Searching for what to pack for your Amboseli adventure? First, be open-minded and ready to make great memories. Bring enough space to store your photos and videos. Dress comfortably.
Avoid heavy or tight clothes. Choose clothes that are easy to wash so you can reuse them during the safari. It is best not to wear bright colors on game drives because they might scare animals.
Most game drives happen in the morning, so bring warm clothes you can take off when it gets hot. Wearing clothes in layers works well.
The most important items to pack for your Amboseli safari include:
- Clothes in khaki, neutral, or dull colors
- Many long-sleeved shirts to protect from mosquitoes and insects
- Light t-shirts
- Shorts or skirts (if you prefer)
- Sweaters for cold mornings and evenings
- Jeans and safari pants
- A light rain jacket, since it can rain any time
- Swimwear for swimming or beach visits
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturizer, and lip balm
- Camera with spare batteries and memory cards
- Binoculars and a scope if you have one
Most airlines limit luggage to between 15 and 24 kilograms, so pack carefully. Many lodges offer laundry services, so you can wash and reuse clothes during your trip.
Other useful but less important items to bring include:
- Personal toiletries like shampoo, soap, deodorant, hairbrush, toothpaste, conditioner, and toothbrush
- Wipes, hand sanitizer, and sanitary products for women
- Scissors and a pocket knife
- An alarm clock to keep track of time
- A money pouch or belt for safety
- Field guide books
- A pen and notebook
Packing well will help you enjoy your Amboseli safari comfortably and safely.
You can visit Amboseli National Park at any time of the year. The park has two main seasons that come twice a year. The wet season runs from March to mid-June and from October to November. The dry season runs from December to February and from mid-June to September. December is a festive month and marks the start of the first dry season. Although it is mostly dry, there can still be some rain carried over from November.
Even though December is a dry month, it can still rain because Amboseli is near the equator, where rain can happen any time of the year. In December, the park gets about 234 mm of rain. The average temperature is usually around 27°C during the day and about 18°C at night. Days are about 12 hours long, with the sun rising at around 6:20 a.m. and setting at 5:40 p.m.
