February Safari in Amboseli National Park – Weather & What to Pack

Amboseli national park is a very famous tourist destination in Kenya located in the Southern part of the country

February is a dry month in Amboseli, but sometimes there can be light rain that continues from March. Since this area is near the equator, rain can fall at any time of the year.

In February, the park receives about 109mm of rain. The average daytime temperature is around 30°C, and the lowest is about 18°C.

The sun usually rises at 6:20 am and sets at around 5:40 pm, giving you about 12 hours of daylight.

It is good to talk with your tour operator to help you choose the best time to visit.

What to Pack for Your Amboseli February Safari

First, make sure you are open-minded, ready to explore, and have space to store your memories through photos or videos. It is also important to wear comfortable clothes. Do not wear tight or heavy clothes. Choose clothes that are easy to wash and can dry quickly, in case you want to wash them during your trip.

Avoid wearing bright colors on game drives, as they can disturb animals. Most game drives happen in the morning when it is still cold. It is a good idea to wear clothes in layers, so you can remove some when it gets warmer during the day.

Here are the most important things to pack:

  • Clothes in khaki, dull, or neutral colors
  • Long-sleeved shirts to protect from mosquitoes and other insects
  • Light t-shirts
  • Shorts or skirts for relaxing at the lodge
  • Sweaters or jackets for cold mornings and evenings
  • Jeans or safari pants
  • A light rain jacket (rain can come at any time)
  • Swimwear or beachwear
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, insect repellent, moisturizer, and lip balm
  • Camera with spare battery and memory cards
  • Binoculars or a spotting scope if possible

Most airlines limit your luggage to around 15 to 24 kilograms. Keep this in mind when packing. Many lodges offer laundry services, so you don’t need to carry too many clothes. You can wash and reuse them during your safari.

Other useful items to pack include:

  • A personal toiletry bag with shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, conditioner, and a hairbrush
  • Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and sanitary products for ladies
  • Small scissors and a pocketknife
  • A small alarm clock to help you keep track of time
  • A money pouch or money belt
  • Field guidebooks
  • A pen and notebook

These small items may not seem very important, but they can make your safari more comfortable.

You can visit Amboseli National Park at any time of the year. The park has two seasons, and each season happens twice a year. The wet season is from March to mid-June and again from October to December.

The dry season is from December to February and from mid-June to September.
