Amboseli National Park Size, Wildlife & Safari Highlights

Zebras in Amboseli - Blog

Size of Amboseli National Park – Amboseli National Park was first gazetted as a conservation area in 1902 and later declared a game reserve in 1948. It officially became a national park in 1974. Amboseli covers an area of about 392 square kilometers. The park has a mix of dry lake basins, open plains, bushes, woodlands, and savanna vegetation.

There is plenty of wildlife to see in the park. Some of the animals found here include baboons, lions, cheetahs, elephants, black rhinos, hippos, Maasai giraffes, buffaloes, oryx, wildebeests, gerenuk, impalas, and gazelles.

Amboseli National Park is one of the most visited safari parks in Kenya. It is well known for its views and for the many animals that live there. Visitors enjoy game drives and other safari activities. These experiences, along with the park’s natural feel, make it one of the top safari destinations in the country.

The park is located in the southern part of Kenya, in Kajiado County. Much of the land is flat plains, but there are also lowlands and a dry lake basin. This seasonal lake is called Lake Amboseli. It fills with water at certain times of the year.

The vegetation in the park is mostly savanna, with some woodlands, thickets, and swamps. The park has both dry and wet areas, so many types of wildlife can live here easily. The swampy parts of the park support a lot of birdlife. Around 420 bird species have been recorded in the park.

The Maasai people live around the park. They once lived inside the area before it was set aside for wildlife. The name “Amboseli” comes from the Maasai language. It means “salty dust.”

There are many reasons to visit this park. Because of its large elephant population, Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to film and study elephants in their natural home.
