The park is surrounded by the Masai people who used to inhabit the park before it was gazzetted for wildlife. The Masai people also name this national park. The Park has some arid areas as well as swampy area and therefore the wildlife can survive here with no difficulty as they have a mixture of the two. The swampy areas support a lot of wildlife but mostly the bird population in this park. There are about 420 bird species that have been recorded here.
The park derives its name from the indigenous Masai people that inhabited this place. The word ‘Amboseli’ means Salty dust in the Masai language. There are many reasons to love this national park. Due to the large herd of Elephants in the Amboseli National park, this is probably the best area in Africa were one can do documentaries and research on elephants.
