Amboseli National Park Ecosystem – Wildlife, Landscapes & Kilimanjaro’s Influence

LOCATION OF AMBOSELI

The Amboseli ecosystem is amazing. Amboseli National Park is located in southern Kenya, near the northern border with Tanzania. It is one of the richest parks in East Africa in terms of wildlife and natural features.

The Amboseli ecosystem is strongly influenced by Mount Kilimanjaro, which lies nearby. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Its glaciers melt to form underground streams that help supply water to Amboseli National Park.

The western part of the park is drier and farther from the Kilimanjaro ecosystem. Despite the dry conditions, many wild animals live in this area. Some of them include elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, hartebeests, gazelles, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, elands, gerenuks, and lesser kudus. More than 400 bird species have also been recorded in the park.

Amboseli’s rich wildlife is supported by the different types of habitats found in the area. These include alpine meadows, forests, woodlands, dry bushland, grasslands, swamps, seasonal lakes, lava fields, and flat plains near high mountains. The variety of landscapes allows many species to survive throughout the year.

Amboseli is one of the most visited safari parks in Kenya. Visitors are attracted by the large number of animals and the beautiful views. The park still feels natural and is less affected by human development compared to many other places. Many travelers come to experience this untouched environment.

Amboseli is found in Kajiado County and covers about 392 square kilometers. Most of the park is flat, but some areas are low-lying. There is a dry lake basin, which becomes a seasonal lake called Lake Amboseli during the rains. The main vegetation includes savanna, woodlands, thickets, and swamps.

The Maasai people live around the park. They used to live inside the area before it was set aside for wildlife conservation. The word “Amboseli” comes from the Maasai language and means “salty dust.”

Amboseli is also one of the best places in Africa to study and film elephants, thanks to the large herds found in the park.
