Geography of Amboseli National Park – Landscapes, Swamps & Wildlife

Amboseli National Park in November

Geography of Amboseli National Park – Amboseli National Park covers an area of about 392 square kilometers. It lies in the Rift Valley region of Kenya, in Kajiado County, within Oloitokitok District in southern Kenya.

The park has wide open Savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, and wetlands including swamps, marshes, and lakes. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro forms a beautiful backdrop to the park. Visitors can enjoy views of the mountain from many different areas while driving inside the park.

Even though Amboseli is in a semi-arid area, it has a steady supply of underground water. This water flows from the melting glaciers on top of Mount Kilimanjaro and feeds the park’s swamps and marshes.

Most of the park is covered by wetlands, which support a rich ecosystem. These areas provide important habitats for many bird species and offer water to animals during the dry months of June, July, August, and September. Some well-known swamps in the park include Ol Tukai, Ekongo Narok, and Olokeya.

Amboseli is home to many animals. The park is especially famous for its large herds of elephants, but you can also find buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, lions, hippos, and many other species.

The weather in Amboseli is mostly hot and dry. There are two main seasons: the wet season, which includes short and long rains, and the dry season, which is also the peak tourism period.

Amboseli has a lot to offer visitors, from wildlife to great views. The presence of Mount Kilimanjaro makes the scenery even more special. If you enjoy nature, animals, and open landscapes, Amboseli is a great place to plan your next safari.

Amboseli National Park is located about 240 kilometers southeast of Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. Its close distance to the capital makes it the second most visited national park in the country.

The park lies in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, which is found across the border in northern Tanzania.
