Amboseli National Park has one main airstrip that visitors use when flying into the park. This airstrip is known as the Amboseli Airstrip. It is the only public airstrip inside the park, but there are several other smaller, private airstrips in the surrounding area. Most of these private airstrips belong to lodges and camps, and they are usually used by guests who are staying at those places.
The Amboseli Airstrip has a single runway that is about 1,200 meters long. It is large enough to handle small aircraft that are commonly used for domestic flights in Kenya. Most flights to this airstrip come from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. The flight from Nairobi to Amboseli takes about 30 to 40 minutes. This short flight is very convenient, especially for travelers who want to avoid the long drive by road.
Although Nairobi is the most common departure point, it is also possible to fly into Amboseli from other airports and airstrips in Kenya. Some flights even come from airports in nearby countries like Uganda and Tanzania, especially if you are doing a cross-border safari.
The airstrip is located in the central part of Amboseli National Park, which makes it easy to reach most of the safari lodges and camps in the park. The runway is partly paved, but some areas are still covered with murram (gravel). Even though the facilities are simple, the airstrip serves its purpose well and is used daily by local airline companies.
One of the best things about flying to Amboseli is the view. As the plane approaches the park, you can enjoy clear views of the open plains, wildlife, and on a good day, Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. It is a great way to start your safari experience from the air.
Flying to Amboseli is a fast, easy, and scenic way to get to the park, especially if you want to save time and enjoy the beauty of Kenya from above.
