Amboseli Safari in October – Weather Guide & What to Pack

In October, Amboseli is usually wet, but that does not mean it rains all day. This is an equatorial area, so the weather can change often. It may rain or shine at any time. October receives about 82mm of rain. The highest temperature is about 30°C, and the lowest is around 17°C. The sun rises at about 6:20 am and sets at around 5:40 pm, so you have about 12 hours of daylight.

You can talk to your tour operator to help choose the best time to visit the park.

What to Pack for Your Amboseli October Safari

First, be open-minded and ready for adventure. Bring enough storage space, like memory cards or phone space, for all the memories you will capture. Wear comfortable clothes. Avoid heavy or tight clothing. Choose clothes that are easy to wash and dry, as you may need to clean them during your trip.

Avoid wearing bright colors on game drives, as they can disturb animals. Since most game drives are in the morning when it’s cool, pack warm clothes that you can remove later when it gets hot. Layered clothing works best.

Essential items to pack:

  • Clothes in khaki, neutral, or dull colors
  • Long-sleeved shirts to protect against mosquitoes
  • Light t-shirts
  • Shorts or skirts
  • Sweaters for cold mornings and evenings
  • Jeans or safari pants
  • Light rain jacket (it can rain any time)
  • Swimwear or beachwear
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, insect repellent, moisturiser, lip balm
  • Camera, spare battery, and memory cards
  • Binoculars or a scope

Most airlines allow 15 to 24 kilograms of luggage. Keep this in mind when packing. Many lodges offer laundry services, so you can wash and reuse clothes.

Other useful items:

  • Toiletry bag with shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, conditioner, and a hairbrush
  • Wet wipes, hand sanitizers, and sanitary products for ladies
  • Small scissors and a pocketknife
  • Alarm clock to help keep track of time
  • Money pouch or money belt
  • Field guidebooks
  • Pen and notebook

These items will help you stay comfortable and enjoy your safari fully.

You can visit Amboseli National Park at any time of the year. The park has two seasons, and each season happens twice a year. The wet season runs from March to mid-June and again from October to December.

The dry season runs from December to February and mid-June to September. October is a transition month. Even though it is part of the wet season, it can still be hot due to heat carried over from September.
